DKMS: One Swab, One Life – Standing Together Against Blood Cancer
Every three minutes, someone in the world hears the life-changing words: "You have blood cancer." For many, a stem cell transplant from a matching donor is their only chance of survival. Finding that match isn’t always easy—but that's where DKMS comes in. And that’s where we come in.
Our Beginning: From Pain to Purpose
DKMS began in Germany in 1991, born out of one family's loss and their hope to save others. When Peter Harf lost his wife, Mechtild, to leukemia, he didn’t just grieve—he acted. He founded DKMS to find matching donors for blood cancer patients who had no one else.

What We Do, Together
At DKMS, we focus on one powerful thing: finding lifesaving stem cell donors. And that’s something we can all be a part of.
We register as potential donors by simply swabbing the inside of our cheeks and sending the sample to DKMS. If we’re found to be a match for someone in need, we could be the one person who can save their life.
It’s that simple. One swab. One life.
Our Impact So Far
- Active in 7 countries, including India, the US, Germany, and South Africa
- Over 100,000 lives saved through stem cell donations
- More than 11 million people registered as potential donors
Behind every number is a face. A family. A second chance.
How We Can Help
The fight against blood cancer isn’t just for doctors or scientists. It’s a fight we can all take part in, with small, meaningful actions:
- We can register as potential donors
If we’re between 18 and 55 and in good general health, we can order a free swab kit online. It takes just a few minutes, and we stay on the registry until we're 61. - We can spread the word
By sharing information about DKMS with friends, family, or online, we help others join the movement—and maybe save a life too. - We can organize or support donor drives
At schools, workplaces, colleges, or local communities, we can host registration events that help more people get involved. - We can volunteer or donate
Whether it’s our time, skills, or a financial contribution, every bit helps DKMS grow and support more patients.
Together, We Make Hope Possible
We don’t have to be scientists or superheroes to save lives. Sometimes, all it takes is a swab of our cheek and a willingness to say, "I’m here if someone needs me."
DKMS reminds us that hope is powerful—and even more powerful when we create it together. Let’s keep showing up for those still waiting for a match. Because someone out there is counting on us.
